The Pointe du Raz, at Plogoff, is one of Brittany’s great sites, at the tip of the Cap Sizun peninsula in Finistère. From the top of its cliffs above the ocean, you can see the Raz de Sein, a powerful and dangerous current, the Île de Sein and the La Vieille lighthouse, perched on its rock in the sea.
The site, awarded the Grand Site de France label, is explored on foot along marked paths across the heath, among heather and gorse, as far as the neighbouring Baie des Trépassés, a magnificent fine-sand beach swept by waves. In stormy weather, the sight of waves crashing against the rock is impressive, but care is needed near the edge.
The Pointe du Raz fits into a stay in south-west Finistère, with Locronan, Douarnenez, Audierne and the Crozon peninsula. The best time to visit is early in the morning, outside the summer season, to enjoy the site in peace.
