The Île d’Yeu, off the Vendée coast, is a preserved and authentic island, reached only by boat from Fromentine or Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie. About ten kilometres long, it has two faces: a wild south coast of rugged cliffs, and a north coast lined with fine sandy beaches, with Port-Joinville as the main harbour and centre of life.
You can discover the Vieux Château, a medieval fortress set on a rocky spur, the little harbour of La Meule, the Pointe du But and its lighthouses, as well as the salt marshes. The island is best explored by bike, on foot or by electric car, with landscapes that change at every turn.
The Île d’Yeu can be visited in a day or a stay of several nights. It suits an escape on the Vendée coast, with Noirmoutier and Les Sables-d’Olonne nearby. Booking your crossing in advance is recommended, especially in high season.
