Vannes, the prefecture of the Morbihan, is a medieval city on the Gulf of Morbihan, one of the world’s most beautiful bays. Its old town, surrounded by ramparts and French-style gardens, brings together colourful half-timbered houses, cobbled lanes, the Cathedral of Saint-Pierre and the port, from which you set out to explore the Gulf.
The Place des Lices, the Rue Saint-Vincent and the covered market enliven the town, while the marina offers pleasant waterside terraces. Cruises on the Gulf take you to the Île-aux-Moines or the Île d’Arz and let you admire the archipelago and its islets.
Vannes is also an excellent base for discovering the Morbihan: Carnac and its stone alignments, the Rhuys peninsula, Quiberon and Belle-Île. Its railway station, shops and cultural life make it a pleasant city, well connected to the rest of Brittany.
