La Rochelle, in Charente-Maritime, is one of the most appealing cities on the Atlantic coast. Its Old Port, guarded by the Saint-Nicolas and Chain towers, and its Lantern Tower tell centuries of maritime history, while the arcaded streets, the Renaissance town hall and the central market give the city centre a unique charm, very pleasant to explore on foot or by bike.
The city also looks to the ocean: the La Rochelle Aquarium, the maritime museum, the Minimes harbour, one of the largest marinas in Europe, and many terraces facing the sea. The Francofolies festival in July and the Grand Pavois boat show in September make La Rochelle a lively destination throughout the year.
An ideal starting point for the Île de Ré, Île d’Oléron, Île d’Aix, Fort Boyard, Rochefort and the Marais Poitevin, La Rochelle is also well served by train. A stay of two to three days leaves time to enjoy its heritage, its seafood cuisine and its Atlantic way of life.
